The Property
Masseria La Spinetta is a fabulous example of a contemporary house built in a traditional style, where it is possible to enjoy the splendour of the historic masseria without any of the accompanying drawbacks. Built from the local Pietra Leccese (the honey coloured local limestone), lofty stone vaulted ceilings and marble floors are a feature of every room. The thick stone walls provide relief from the summer heat and with the addition of discreet comfort cooling throughout the property and delicious linen sheets from The Linen Works, guests are ensured a good night’s sleep. Under floor heating means the property can be enjoyed throughout the year. Bathrooms have been finished to a very high standard in polished plaster and designer fittings and guests can enjoy the complimentary Aromatherapy Associates products.

La Spinetta is furnished with an eclectic and exotic mix of European antiques, hand crafted contemporary furniture, vast pots from the middle East, ancient Uzbek souzanis and outside, the Indian colonial furniture in Burma teak compliments the property’s cool cloisters and expansive terraces.

Inside
A pair of monumental wooden gates lead into a Moorish style, paved internal courtyard with a large central fountain. The living and sleeping areas of Masseria la Spinetta are all on one floor and the living room lies straight ahead through large arched glass doors. To either side are the two self contained sleeping wings, both suitable for a family. On the right is found the master bedroom wing with double bedroom and large ensuite featuring a deep copper free standing bath. This connects to a dressing room with daybeds designed as additional sleeping for larger families. Both rooms have ample fitted storage and the dressing room has a large TV and DVD player. Beyond the dressing room lies a further bedroom with twin beds, a desk and fitted cupboards. This has its own shower room, finished, as indeed are all the bathrooms, in the same cool polished plaster.

On the left the second bedroom wing features a double bedroom beautifully furnished with an antique French upholstered bed and carved oak armoire. This connects through a small entrance hall to the twin bedroom with charming antique gold cane beds and fitted cupboards and a shared bathroom.

With large glass doors on either side the large living room enjoys views on both sides: on one side out through the cloisters to the terrace, pool and beyond to the olive groves and ancient pine forest; and on the other the internal courtyard with its fountain. At one end of this room is a large open fireplace and seating area with vast recessed TV and at the other is a large desk and arch through to the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen in dark walnut is professionally equipped with a large range cooker and ample food preparation area and connects to an additional utility and storage room with capacious refrigerator/freezer and cloakroom.

An additonal bedroom with an exquisite antique Indo-Portuguese mahogany four poster bed and en suite leads off the dining area and enjoys its own private outdoor terrace.

Outside
The garden at La Spinetta is completely surrounded by a traditional dry stone wall, low in places providing delightful views over the surrounding countryside, and higher in others to create the feel of outdoor ‘rooms’ so typical of the Puglian masseria. Despite being a newly planted garden, the lush lawns, the ancient stone troughs used as water features and the use of mature trees and shrubs lends it an established feel. A large vine covered pergola creates shade for the outdoor dining and kitchen area, well equipped with gas BBQ, dishwasher and fridge as well as a traditional wood fired pizza oven. Guests are welcome to help themselves from the kitchen garden and many different fruit trees during their stay.

There are a number of different shaded areas to escape when the sun is at its zenith, be it the pool side pergola, the stone cloisters or under the lemon trees. For the more energetic, the large pool is long enough for laps and with wide steps at one end and a 3 metre deep end it will provide hours of entertainment for the children. A sunken trampoline, pool toys, badminton, ping pong table, bicycles and other children’s games will ensure no one gets bored.
